We needed our a/c serviced at 4am and Midway had someone out within the hour. He was friendly, informative, and thorough. Luckily it was a minor thing and we were very pleased with three service AND the cost….. so much so that we have contracted with Midway to service or a/c twice a year and our hot water heater once a year at a cost that is only a few dollars more annually than my Amazon prime account. So worth it!

This has driven electrician wages up and therefore prices of such services. We charged 1200-1500 last year on average and now we have to charge 1800-2000 just to cover rising costs.

Just wondering whether or not you use a torquing screwdriver, Electrical inspectors in my area are asking to see the device used for the installation and its certification before signing off. Panels long ago manufactured by Zinsco and FPE have many issues and are considered a hazard by many in the industry.

Admittedly, they do look great. To each his own, though. I learned to fly in a 1963 Cessna 172D in 1964 and got my private certificate that year. When I was looking for a 172 to buy in 1999, I found N2686U (before and after panel photos in post #4 above) and thought the shotgun panel would be fine since that was the panel I learned to fly with. A few flights, though, convinced me that after decades of scanning standard 6-pack instrument arrangements, the old shotgun arrangement just wouldn’t hack it.

Old electrical panels can malfunction, but most of the time their circuits are overloaded. At first you might notice flickering lights or you might have to turn off an appliance in order to use another on the same line. But if the panel is malfunctioning or defective, the breakers will trip often, or they will fail to trip and someone might be shocked. In the worst case, a breaker that fails to trip may cause fire, smoke and melted wires from overheating. And that’s dangerous.

An electrical system needs a main panel to break up the power supply of 100 amps or larger down to branch circuits. Branch circuit requirements start at 15 amps and can go as large as required by the specific item and voltage.

Its just a question. I don’t own a plane at all but if I had one of that vintage I would definitely call Avion Research and explore my options. In my opinion the old panels don’t look good. Again just my opinion and not the end of the world.

This is where the problem lies. The fuses are rated for the wire it is protecting. Our standard lights and receptacles work off a 14 gauge wire. The wire is rated to carry a maximum of 15 amps. So when we plug in too many devices on one circuit the fuse becomes overheated and ‘blows’. By using a larger fuse we may stop the problem of the fuse blowing all the time but the wire is rated to carry only 15 amps. Now that we’re used a larger fuse the wire becomes overheated, as it is working beyond capacity. These overheated wires are running through wood studs in the walls. The potential for fire now exists.

Pushmatic breakers are very unreliable. The indicator flag is supposed to show whether the circuit is on or off. Many times this on/off flag will stay fixed in either position, giving homeowner a false indication of the condition of the circuit. If the circuit breaker is not not used (exercised) and serviced regularly they become stiff and difficult to operate or reset.They may trip easily for no apparent reason.
