You can upgrade your panel for both functional and financial reasons. Modern homes need more power than decades-old homes and businesses. As technology grows, power requirements will continue to increase. Prospective homeowners may look at old panels as a sign of an obsolete electrical system in disrepair. Updating can make a difference for resale.

Admittedly, they do look great. To each his own, though. I learned to fly in a 1963 Cessna 172D in 1964 and got my private certificate that year. When I was looking for a 172 to buy in 1999, I found N2686U (before and after panel photos in post #4 above) and thought the shotgun panel would be fine since that was the panel I learned to fly with. A few flights, though, convinced me that after decades of scanning standard 6-pack instrument arrangements, the old shotgun arrangement just wouldn’t hack it.

The correct name is “load center”. The electrical panel can also be called a “panelboard”, “fuse box”, “circuit breaker panel”, “circuit breaker box”, “electrical box”, or “electrical service”. Electrical panel houses circuit breakers and distributes power throughout the house.  If too much current (power) were to flow into the wires in your home, they could melt and possibly start a fire. If you were to accidentally touch a damaged overloaded wire, you could receive an electrical shock and possibly get electrocuted. To prevent more electrical flow than the wires are designed for, your breakers in the electrical service panel are supposed to detect the problem and stop the flow (break the circuit). Either blow the fuse or trip the breaker.

Midway Services is my call to outstanding work and professionalism by a staff highly trained to repair, remodel, replace and improve home ownership. After 26 years of owning and diligently caring for our home, it just began needing more assistance. A new hot water heater, toilets, tired bathrooms, hard water deposits, outlets that shut off, and the list went on. In the past seven months I have had the experience to work with Midway employees who have entered our home as professional members of a company they take pride in working for. Their work is outstanding. I can hardly wait for them to begin my kitchen remodel! I am proud to say Midway Services is a company I would highly recommend. Their customer satisfaction and work ethic is present every time a service person steps up to the door with Midway Services on that shirt.

The most important reason to update your home’s electrical system is safety. When many older homes were built, they were designed with only 30, 50 or 60 amps for the entire home, using just a few circuits.

Crew showed up on time was very professional. Installed new AC unit. They did a great job on the installation and cleaned up throughly afterwards. Midway gave me a good price on a nice unit and was very happy dealing with them.

Drilling or carpentry to feed power into home – if the service is upgraded the homeowner may need to arrange for an adequate access to be created from the exterior of the home to the interior space nearest the panel; and

This is why the insurance companies would like the panel changed over from fuses to breakers. They know that the home will be much safer with a new breaker panel than the old fuse panel. Our electricians have changed over many old fuse panels that were in great shape for this very reason. There is nothing wrong with the panel. It’s human error where the problem lies.

Don’t forget the potential upgrades necessary for a 100 amp to 100 amp panel change. Existing grounding is frequently inadequate and needs to be brought up to a safer condition. The 2011 NEC requires AFCI breakers ($60-$80@ installed cost) in all living-dining-bedroom areas, 2014 NEC adds many more areas to this AFCI requirement.

The wisest course of action for electrical circuit panel installation is to work with a licensed electrician who can help to accurately determine the precise needs for the home in question. A homeowner must always request references, ensure that the professional has adequate proof of insurance, and should obtain information about warranties on the work. It is a good idea to also seek at least three bids before selecting the provider if doing a full upgrade project as this will lower total costs considerably.

Create schematic of functions of all switches (this can be very time consuming in older buildings or those using sub panels, but is also extremely helpful in knowing which circuits to deactivate when working on electrical systems at a later date).

An electrical system needs a main panel to break up the power supply of 100 amps or larger down to branch circuits. Branch circuit requirements start at 15 amps and can go as large as required by the specific item and voltage.

Make sure your electrician is licensed and familiar with local electrical codes. Every village and city in Chicagoland is free to set their own rules and requirements when it comes to electrical installations. Many adopted 2001 National Electrical Code (NEC) or 2005 version. Village of Oak Brook goes by 2008 NEC which is very different from previous editions of NEC. Village of Morton Grove adopted Chicago Electrical Code (different grounding rules). Also, many municipalities have their own amendments to NEC. For example, city of Des Plaines requires a panel with copper bus bars, city of Evanston requires a fused disconnect for dishwashers. Hire a licensed and experienced electrician to avoid costly mistakes.

It would be tough. The entire forward fuselage of the 1961 and later 172s is a quite different design – including the panel, glareshield, windshield, upper cowl, control column location, and so on. If you’re looking to have gyro instruments with venturi tubes you need a vacuum pump, and the O-300 engine in the pre-1961 models was not designed to accommodate one.

In order to get the center stack, you need to replace the original “T” control column assembly with the later “U” control column assembly. Avion Research http://avion.com/ sells STC’d panel upgrade kits that include a rebuilt “U” control column.

Be sure to plan and install these electrical wiring projects by permit and obtain all inspections from your local building department. All electrical projects such as this is best installed by a licensed electrical contractor for best results and to ensure efficiency and accuracy.

Had several bids to replace our entire HVAC system that crashed. Midway Services gave a great price and advice on the system we needed. Installed in 1-day and with extreme professionalism. We could not have been more satisfied. Their Techs were amazing and even cleaned the house before leaving. I was surprised that they did not even break for lunch so we got them pizza which they grabbed from time to time as they kept working. What a crew! Highly reccomend Midway and, in fact, we will be using them for the remodel of our bathroom and enlargement of our bedroom.

Unfortunately, in many older electrical systems, the circuit breakers don’t trip, even when the circuit is overloaded. Typically, a breaker will not trip due to a loose connection somewhere within the circuit.
