Homes more than 12 – 15 years old may still have indoor boxes. Moving it outside could be necessary and add to the cost of the project. Otherwise, location shouldnt affect the price of installation. Project cost increases if a professional must tear out and replace drywall or plaster to perform the necessary work. Expect to pay about $1.50 per square foot for professional drywall repair.
Admittedly, they do look great. To each his own, though. I learned to fly in a 1963 Cessna 172D in 1964 and got my private certificate that year. When I was looking for a 172 to buy in 1999, I found N2686U (before and after panel photos in post #4 above) and thought the shotgun panel would be fine since that was the panel I learned to fly with. A few flights, though, convinced me that after decades of scanning standard 6-pack instrument arrangements, the old shotgun arrangement just wouldn’t hack it.
As a 1957 172 owner, also in Ohio, please leave the shotgun panel alone. They look great as-is. I don’t know what your goal is, but there is plenty of room down with the push-pull buttons to install whatever you need.
Electrical panel upgrades can also make your home safer, adding in critical elements like a main breaker and fixing problems at the circuit and outlet levels. This is particularly important in older or historic homes where electricity was added after initial construction. Many modern materials are much more durable and provide a greater degree of safety than those of even 50 years ago.
In order to get the center stack, you need to replace the original “T” control column assembly with the later “U” control column assembly. Avion Research http://avion.com/ sells STC’d panel upgrade kits that include a rebuilt “U” control column.
Properly functioning circuit breakers (or fuses) are vital for your safety and the safety of your home. Your electrical panel also needs to be big enough to handle your family’s electrical needs. If you add a room to your house, add central air conditioning unit or electric cloth dryer, you may need a bigger panel to handle the increased electrical load. This is called a “panel upgrade” or “service upgrade”.
Your home’s heart might have a serious defect if it’s more than 25 years old, because there are some electrical panels back then that now have known safety issues due to poor designs. Electrical panels installed after 1990 are generally well designed and safe. Call Mr. Electric right away to replace the following types of defective panels:
The work was done by Glenn who explained everything to me before he started. He was efficient and courteous and friendly. I’ve used Midway before for duct cleaning and I am pleased to be a customer. Thank you.
It would be tough. The entire forward fuselage of the 1961 and later 172s is a quite different design – including the panel, glareshield, windshield, upper cowl, control column location, and so on. If you’re looking to have gyro instruments with venturi tubes you need a vacuum pump, and the O-300 engine in the pre-1961 models was not designed to accommodate one.
We needed our a/c serviced at 4am and Midway had someone out within the hour. He was friendly, informative, and thorough. Luckily it was a minor thing and we were very pleased with three service AND the cost….. so much so that we have contracted with Midway to service or a/c twice a year and our hot water heater once a year at a cost that is only a few dollars more annually than my Amazon prime account. So worth it!
