You may remember I shared my living room makeover here a few months ago. One project we didn’t get to in this space was replacing the outlets.   My husband wanted to switch out the receptacles that were an off white, yellowish color with white ones.  We finally got around to doing that last weekend, and I thought I share with you how to replace an electrical outlet if you want to do it yourself.

At A-Team Electrical Services, Inc. in Chino Valley, AZ, our certified electricians provide circuit breaker installations and repairs for residential and commercial customers throughout Phoenix, Prescott and surrounding areas. We have the tools and experience necessary to inspect, diagnose and repair any problems you may be experiencing. If you have an old circuit breaker which doesn’t have enough room for more circuits to be added, contact our professionals for an upgrade today!

Take a look at how the outlet is wired up. You’ll notice that there are two black wires connected to the outlet on one side, and two white wires on the other side, as well as a bare copper wire connected to a green screw. The black wires are the power (or “hot”) wires, the white wires are the neutral (or “return”) wires, and the bare copper wire is the ground wire. Electricity flows through the hot wire, entering the outlet and then into whatever is plugged into it, and then returns through the neutral wire (these wires are known as the “line” wires). However, the extra black and white wires are for continuing the circuit to other areas of the house, so the outlet is also acting as a junction of sorts. These are known as the “load” wires.

Ellison: If you need a new GFI outlet, we’ll just change out the outlet and install a new circuit for that receptacle. We’ll also take a look at the home’s main panel, which will tell us what’s going on with the rest of the house and if the system has been upgraded. Replacing just the panel can cost anywhere from $1,200 to $1,800 and takes about four to eight hours. In Indiana, any electrical contractor you hire should be licensed on a city or county level. A permit is usually required in most counties and from the power company any time you’re replacing a home’s main electrical equipment or doing a significant amount of rewiring. The cost of the permit is included in our bill.

Do considerable background research on any electrician you’re considering. Ask for references and check them all. Check the company’s rating with the Better Business Bureau and, if you’re a member, Angie’s List.

Before you start, locate the circuit breaker or fuse that controls the outlet you plan to replace and shut off the power to the circuit. Plug a lamp, radio or the GFCI tester into the outlet to test for power and make sure it’s off. Then unscrew and pull out the old outlet and count the number of wires in the box. Calculate the minimum box size required for all of the wires plus the GFCI (see “Required Box Size,” below). If the existing box is large enough, follow the steps in Photos 1 – 4 to replace the outlet with a GFCI. Replace an undersized box with a new one of adequate size. (For more information on box replacement, see What You Should Do With Crowded Electrical Boxes).

The project manager was on top of the whole project and the field supervisors not only laid out and managed the job perfectly, they also had time to shoe-horn in the new UPS B battery cabinets.  All considerations were made to accommodate a very picky and demanding client.

One thing I noticed in reviewing this question and my response for possible use on another question – in my initial answer, item #2, I stated (about adding grounding to ungrounded internal house wiring) – “you might just run separate ground wire to each fixture and outlet. Not necessarily by the same routing as the original wiring…”

In pretty much every house where an outlet is close to a water source, you’ll usually find what’s called a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). This is a type of outlet that’s meant to quickly shut off power at that outlet when it detects a short circuit or a ground fault.
